Craven County
Voter Registration Records, 1902-1908

The following website is based upon the microfilmed Secretary of State series Voter Registration Records, 1902-1908 (microfilm S.108.114.7). The originals were microfilmed by the North Carolina State Records section in 1968 and then destroyed.

According to the finding aid filmed at the beginning of the reel, the North Carolina Constitution was amended by a vote in August 1900 which became effective in July 1902. The amendment "provided that no person entitled to vote as of January 1, 1867, or at any time prior thereto, and no lineal descendant of any such person could be denied the right to register and vote in any state election by reason of his failure to possess the required educational qualifications."

As part of the amendment, an act was created to provide a permanent registration of all persons entitled to vote. The Voter Registration Records found in this site were a result of the act. Individual counties prepared the lists, by township, for the years 1902, 1904, 1906, and 1908. These were eventually deposited with the North Carolina Secretary of State.
