"Let's Talk About It..."

Picturing America: Making Tracks

Registration Begins: August 21, 2017

The railroad came to define and shape our continent and made a profound impact on Americans' sense of mobility and range of opportunities. This theme will explore nonfiction works, poetry, film, and novels that explore the history of the railroad and its economic impact on communities and indivudals.

All programs are Mondays at 7 p.m. in the Hayden H. Jones Auditorium.

  • September 11--Nothing Like It in the World: The Men Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad by Stephen Ambrose, discussion led by Willie Nelms, Sheppard Memorial Library (retired). Book available August 21, 2017.
  • September 25--A Selection of Poems, discussion led by Anne Baker, North Carolina State University.
  • October 9--Rising from the Rails by Larry Tye, discussion led by Billy Yeargin, Jr., Duke University.
  • October 23--Riding the Rails a film by Michael Uys and Lexy Lovell, discussion led by Michelle Manning, Univeristy of North Carolina, Wilmington. SESSION STARTS AT 6:45
  • November 6--Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson, discussion led by Bill DiNome, University of North Carolina, Wilmington.
