2012 Civil War Commemoration Events

December  15, 2011

Registration begins for “Let’s Talk About It: Making Sense of the American Civil War” a read and discuss series. Books will be available for loan. The discussion series will be led by Dr. Gerald Prokopowicz, Chairman of the Department of History at East Carolina University.  

January 21, Saturday, 2:00 p.m.

Program: “The Occupation: One Woman’s View”
Alma Gibbons, a character interpreter for Tryon Palace, will portray Ida Marsh, a young woman from a prominent Craven County family reminiscing about her privileged life as a young woman before the war & the hardships endured by the civilians during the occupation & beyond. Ms. Gibbons' interpretation is based on her research including period diaries.

Movie: “Little Women”  This 1994 version of Louisa May Alcott's classic stars Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder and Kirsten Dunst.

Exhibit: “Freedom, Sacrifice, Memory” : Civil War Sesquicentennial Photography Exhibit – Library Auditorium  
The N.C. Department of Cultural Resources will display 24 images from the State Archives, the N.C. Museum of History and State Historic Sites. New Bern is one of 50 libraries across the state to host the exhibit that showcases “Freedom, Sacrifice, Memory” offering visuals that present gallant women, African American triumph and the perseverance of Confederate soldiers.

Lunch and Learn Series: Bernard George, a member of the 37th Regiment of U.S. Colored Troops Living History Association, will be the featured speaker.

Let’s Talk About It Session 2: Choosing Sides: Readings from America's War anthology, part 2.

February 18, Saturday, 2:00 p.m.

Movie: “Glory” 
The story of the all-black members of the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, headed by Col. Robert Gould Shaw, the son of an influential abolitionist.  

February 26, Sunday, 3:00 p.m.

Lecture: Dr. Joseph Glatthaar will speak about his book “Forged in Battle: the Civil War Alliance of Black Soldiers and Their White Officers”.  Glatthaar, Stephenson Distinguished Professor at UNC-Chapel Hill, has written extensively about the Civil War including “General Lee’s Army: From Victory to Collapse” and “Soldiering in the Army of Northern Virginia”  

March 5, Monday, 7:00 p.m.

Lecture: “Slave Voices of North Carolina”
Dr. Lucinda MacKethan will introduce the personal narratives, letters, poetry, and interviews of North Carolina slaves and discuss how these works fill in a lost or often distorted picture of slavery in our state before the Civil War.
