The New Bern-Craven County Public Library is seeking dynamic individuals with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment; ability to work well with a diverse public and have strong customer service skills; ability to use a variety of technologies including computers, cash registers, copiers, and eReaders; accuracy and attention to detail with a high level of productivity are required.

Library Assistant I
Permanent, Part-Time Circulation Assistant
(2 positions available)

Duties: Acknowledges eachlibrary patron with a pleasant greeting and promotes the library's collection and services in a friendly and helpful manner. Assists patrons in locating materials, using the library's online catalog, and requesting materials. Efficiently checks materials in and out for patrons. Empties the book drop and video drop on a regular basis as assigned. Accurately sorts and shelves materials, shelf-reads, and shifts items as needed. Registers new patrons and updates patron records according to library policy. Addresses account issues concerning fines and fees. Cross-trains in other departments. Job requires lifting, bending, stooping, pushing, and standing for long periods of time.

Work Schedule: Rotating schedule of approximately 20 hours per week, including 2-3 nights per week and 1-2 weekends (Saturdays & Sundays) per month.

Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED or an equivalent combination of experience and training. An additional Associate Degree in Liberal Arts or Library Technical Services is preferred. Computer skills for this position are essential. Experience in library work or a working knowledge of library science is desirable.

Starting Salary: $9.40 per hour, inlcudes holiday pay. Sick and vacation leave accrual after a 4 month probationary period. Position is available for NC Local Govermental Employees' Retirement System.


Library Assistant III
Permanent, Full-Time Reference Assistant

Duties: Acknowledges eachlibrary patron with a pleasant greeting and promotes the library's collection and services in a friendly and helpful manner. Provides readers' advisory and reference services. Assists patrons in locating materials, using the library's online catalog, and requesting materials. Assists patrons with using the Internet, eReaders, and electronic resources. Answers a variety of reference questions utilizing the library's print and digital collections. Assists in planning, promoting, and implementing programs for adults and seniors. Assists with collection development, creates brochures, bibliographies, and displays on library resources. Performs intermediate troubleshooting of library equipment. Cross-trains in other departments. Job requires lifting, bending, stooping, pushing, and standing for long periods of time.

Work Schedule: 40 hours per week, including 2 nights per week and 1-2 weekends (Saturdays & Sundays) per month.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or have an equivalent combination of experience and training. Computer skills for this position are essential. Experience in library work or a working knowledge of library science is desirable.

Starting Salary: $12.00 per hour, inlcudes holiday pay. Sick and vacation leave accrual after a 4 month probationary period. Position is available for health insurance and NC Local Govermental Employees' Retirement System.
