TRAIN is a teen advisory board for the New Bern–Craven County Public Library. TRAIN members brainstorm ideas and make decisions that are beneficial to teen patrons of the library.  They choose books for the young adult collection, provide information for the young adult web page and organize programs such as:

There are very few opportunities in the community for teens to be on the advisory board for an organization.  Participation in TRAIN is a good experience as well as a means to acquire  community service hours to meet honor society requirements. Board members can include this activity on college applications.

The monthly meetings are very informal.  We provide bagels, muffins, hot drinks, and juice during the discussions. The meetings are held one Saturday each month from 10:00 a.m.- 11:00 a.m.

Here is what some of our teen patrons and TRAIN members have to say:

"I enjoy reading so being on the teen advisory board for the library was a natural fit for me. I was able to use the volunteer hours that I accumulated -- from attending meetings, participating in special events, and reviewing books and anime DVDs as the chairman for graphic novel collection development -- toward the National Honor Society community service hours requirement."  TRAIN board member, Latara Sydnor

“The variety of books in different genres that are available in the young adult section is great.  I loved playing Animal Jeopardy last  summer”.  Summer Reading Program participate & prize winner, Matthew C.

“Being on the TRAIN board is a good way to contribute to the library and the community.  And the library has a new space for teens to have a quiet place of their own to enjoy a good book”.  TRAIN board member, Hillary S.

"I’ve been a patron of the New Bern – Craven County Public Library for a long time and now I’m involved as a volunteer.  As a TRAIN member I can contribute by reading and reviewing advance copy books from publishers, voicing my opinions and suggestions for programs, and helping to prepare and run special events."  TRAIN board member, Neil M.
